Evidence-Based Therapies That We Offer

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
Emotions can feel like turbulent waters, tossing you around when past experiences haven’t fully settled. Sometimes, your mind does not process a difficult memory completely, leaving feelings, body reactions, or thoughts swirling long after the event.
In EMDR, I guide you to focus on the memory while following simple, rhythmic movements—like side-to-side eye movements, tapping, sounds, or vibrations. These movements help your brain gently untangle the memory, much like calming stormy seas, so the waves of emotion lose their intensity. Together, we work so that the memory becomes easier to think about and the feelings connected to it feel more manageable.
The goal of EMDR: to help you feel steadier, more in control, and less weighed down by past experiences, so you can navigate life with greater ease. In EMDR, you can expect:
A calm, steady pace: You remain in control while working through challenging memories.
Gentle, guided movements: Bilateral eye movements, tapping, sounds, or vibrations help your brain process memories safely.
A focus on grounding: Stay present and steady, even as difficult emotions arise.
New perspectives: Notice new insights, thoughts, or feelings emerge.
Gradual relief: Over time, the intensity of the memory diminishes.

Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)
SFBT helps you move toward the future you want, rather than spending excessive time on past problems. Think of it as navigating life’s storms—not getting stuck in the waves, but noticing your strengths, recognizing what is going well, and taking small steps toward calmer waters. In SFBT, you talk about:
Your hopes and desired outcomes
Moments where life already feels a little better
I will guide you to find practical, manageable steps you can start using immediately. In SFBT, you can expect:
A focus on your future: Chart a course through life’s storms.
Straightforward questions: Notice your strengths and possibilities.
Small, practical steps: Actions to move closer to your goals.
Recognition of your strengths: Build on moments that have gone well.
Brief, goal-focused approach: Progress often appears in just a few sessions.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
CBT helps you understand the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and actions. Think of it as learning to steer a boat through choppy waters—giving you practical tools to manage emotional waves and stay balanced.
CBT focuses on what is happening in your life right now, helping you notice interpretations of situations and their impact on your feelings and responses. You learn new ways of thinking and coping to adjust your course as challenges arise. In CBT, you can expect:
Clear structure: Always know what you are working on.
Goal-focused: Choose areas you want to improve.
Practical tools and skills: Apply techniques between sessions.
Team approach: You and I work together for support through life’s ups and downs.

Family Systems Therapy
Life can feel like a stormy sea, with waves of conflict, tension, or misunderstanding affecting not just you but those around you. Family Systems Therapy helps you understand how you are connected to the people and communities around you.
We explore patterns, communication, problem-solving, and support strategies, so your relationships feel steadier and your daily life becomes less turbulent.
In Family Systems Therapy, you can expect:
Support with relationships: Understand how family, friends, and community affect your emotional “current.”
Safe, guided conversations: Navigate challenges without blame.
Practical steps: Manage tension, improve communication, maintain steadier relationships.
You are never alone. Overcoming Waves Psychology & Counselling is here to support you every step of the way, helping you feel safe, heard, and understood.
